When it comes to heart-warming family movies, Disney is
considered one of the best. Since 1923, Disney has changed the world with charismatic characters and exciting stories. The 2012 movie “Brave” is no exception.
This story speaks of the importance of family and that no matter what happens in
life, family will always be there for you.
The plot of this story is similar to many other Disney films. It starts with the hero or heroine amidst a struggle, whether it is the
need for adventure, parental acceptance or a sense of one’s own identity. This
individual then has to embark and a journey. This being a physical journey over great distances, or a spiritual journey trying to find ones identity, or both. . “Brave” is about a young Scottish princess named Merida in
the time of Vikings. All of the Viking tribes wish for their heirs to marry
Merida, but she only wishes for freedom. This causes a struggle between her
family’s views and hers, and leads to Merida consulting to a witch for help. The witch offers her a solution, but this only gives rise to even more problems that will end up tearing her family apart forever. She must then go on a spiritual and a physical journey in order to save her family.
Although the main message of the movie is about family
values, there are also other messages this movie tries to tell its viewers. The
first is to not let society decide what you should do or who you should be.
Merida is tired of her family traditions, and does not wish to follow the guidelines
set by her parents. She is a strong independent female and only wishes to live
happily and free. The second message in this story is the same in many of other
Disney movies but is more powerful in this movie. This message is to tell
viewers to be brave and to stand up for their beliefs, and have the strength to
follow their dreams.
